SDS = Short-period design spectral acceleration coefficient [dimensionless]
Ed (Z) = Design-based earthquake effect under the influence of the earthquake in the (Z) direction
G = Dead load

  • In accordance with TBDY 2018 4.4.3, the vertical earthquake effect Ed (Z) on the parts of the structural system other than the elements specified below and on the buildings that do not contain these elements is calculated automatically by Equation (4.10) without making a special calculation.

(a) Buildings containing beams with a  horizontal projection of their spans of 20 m or more;

(b)  Buildings containing cantilevers with a horizontal projection of their spans of 5 m or more;

(c) Buildings containing columns resting on beams,

(d) Buildings with columns inclined relative to the vertical.

  • Since the elements listed above are not available in this building, the vertical earthquake effect Ed (Z) is calculated automatically with equation 4.10 .

  • G in Equation 4.10 is the constant load. When calculating by hand for an element, we need to consider all the constant loads on the element. For this reason, it is easier to check whether the calculation outputs of the program are correct instead of calculating the values to be entered as loads manually in structures with many elements such as this building. The following explains how to control the account outputs.

  • In order to perform the manual control, it is checked whether the ratio between G loading and Ed (Z) loading is equal to (2/3)SDS while examining the cross-section effects in the program interface . E.g; For the relevant column with images below, this ratio is calculated as follows:

  • This ratio is controlled in the column internal force results as follows.
