When you click on an empty place in the drawing area and move the cursor from left to right, you select only the entities within the rectangle, and when you move the cursor from right to left, you select both the objects within the rectangle and all the objects that the cursor passes over. Moreover, you can do the opposite by holding down the shift key during the process.
