The application of an overstrength factor, Ωo, is applied to some seismic load combinations in ASCE/SEI 7. These load combinations are attempted for members or connections whose inelastic behavior cause poor system performance.
They are critical elements on the load path, and they are not likely to perform well in the inelastic range. Members and connections requiring the special seismic load combinations incorporating the overstrength factor, Ωo, in ASCE/SEI 7, include the followings:

  1. Elements supporting discontinuous walls or frames (Section 12.3.3.3)

  2. Collectors for structures in SDC C through F (Section 12.10.2.1)

  3. Batter piles (Section 12.13.6.4)

  4. Pile anchorage (Section 12.13.6.5)

  5. Pile splices (Section 12.13.6.6)
