Symbols

SDS = Short period design spectral acceleration coefficient
Sav = Design vertical response spectral acceleration
D = Dead load
Ev = Vertical seismic load
Eh = Horizontal seismic load effect

Vertical Seismic Load Effect

The vertical seismic load effect, Ev, is determined in according to Eq. (12.4-4a) for buildings that are seismic design categories A and B.

The vertical seismic load effect, Ev, is determined in according to Eq. (12.4-4b) for buildings that are seismic design categories C, D, E and F.

The vertical seismic load effect can be taken as zero for either of the following conditions:

  • Structures assigned to Seismic Design Category B.

  • In Eq. (12.4-2), where determining demands on the soil–structure interface of foundations.
