Brace Design

Definitions

  • Structural elements such as braces, truss and columns can be classified as a tensile member and designed according to that if it carries the axial tensile force.

  • Structural elements such as braces, truss and columns can be classified as a compression member and designed according to that if it carries the axial compressive force.

Tensile Design

  • Elements under the effect of axial tensile force are basic elements in terms of computation since they are under the effect of uniform axial force, they act in accordance with the stress-strain curve obtained from the tensile tests.

Compression Design

  • Elements under the axial compressive forces suffer from the local and global buckling types.

  • Global buckling can be divided into 3 groups: Flexural Buckling, Torsional-Buckling and Flexural-Torsional Buckling.
