Braced Frames Design Basis

The braced frame design is explained in detail under this title.

Definitions

  • Tension members are structural elements that are subjected to axial tension. Tension members may consist of braces or truss members.

  • Tension members are structural elements that are subjected to axial compression. Compression members may consist of braces, truss members, and columns.

Design of Tension Members

  • Elements subjected to axial tensile force are simple elements in terms of design. Since they are under uniform axial tensile force, they act by the stress-strain curve obtained in tensile tests.

Design of Compression Members

  • There are two main types of buckling, local and global buckling, for elements subjected to axial compression force.

  • Global buckling is divided into three categories: Flexural Buckling, Torsional Buckling, and Flexural Torsional Buckling. These types of buckling are also the limit states of members under compression.
