Notation

D = dead load
E = earthquake load
E_h = effect of horizontal seismic forces
E_m = seismic load effect including overstrength
E_mh = effect of horizontal seismic forces, including overstrength
E_v = vertical seismic effect applied in the vertical downward direction
L = live load
L_r = roof live load
R = rain load
S = snow load
U = strength of a member or cross section required to resist factored loads or related internal moments and forces
W = wind load

Required strength of a member is at least equal to the effects of factored loads determined according to Codes. Internal forces and moments resulting from the load combination are expressed as the required strength to be used in design.
