Determination of Design-Based Internal Forces of Moment-Transferring Frame Elements in Steel Buildings

To select special moment frame columns, two different checks are made and the unfavorable result is used in the design.

(a)    Shear force, axial force and flexural moments obtained from the analysis by considering the loading combinations in accordance with the earthquake code and the steel structures code.

(b)  Axial tensile and compressive forces obtained by increasing D, overstrength factor, regardless of flexural moments.

Special moment frames beams are designed according to the internal forces obtained as a result of modal analysis.
